General information about Tilburg

Experimental, Raw, Different, Energetic, Social and Humoristic! These are the 6 words that describe Tilburg best. Tilburg traditionally consists of different communities that are linked to each other. It is a city with a rich history, full of textile and industries. Tilburg keeps on developing new and innovative ideas. The more you get to know Tilburg, the more you fall in love with it. It is a city for makers and doers and it radiates guts and courage. We love discovering new things and sometimes we fall, but we always get back up again! Tilburg is a city by everyone, to which anyone can contribute. A city where everyone helps each other out and really wants to mean something to someone else. We at VVV Tilburg are very proud to present Tilburg to you!

In the center of Tilburg you can find the big shopping area, which is a perfect way to start your visit. During your visit you will find out Tilburg has so much more to offer than what is visible at first glance! Go visit the railway zone (Spoorzone), the wandering area (Dwaalgebied), the kettle market quarter (Veemarktkwartier) or one of the squares filled with restaurants and cafes. Do you want to fully relax? Than you should visit the harbour (Piushaven). Walk through green courtyards and urban parks full of nature or travel with one of the many organized waterway trips. You can even rent a boat for your own explanation. Feeling hungry? You can find lots of restaurants with amazing views in the harbor!

Sunday shopping/holidays

The city center is opened every day, including Sundays. There are a few exceptions: Easter Sunday, the first day of Pentecost, the first day of Christmas and New Year’s day. Regularly the stores are open from 12 until 5 pm on Sunday.  However, stores are not obligated to open their store on Sunday. We advise you to visit their website and check their opening hours before you go. Opening hours during holidays can differ from the regular hours.

Late-night shopping

Thursday makes a great opportunity for late night shopping. The stores in the city center are opened until 9 p.m. allowing you to have a light evening stroll. Outside of the city center you can do your late night shopping on Friday. Remember that stores are not obligated to open during these times. Check their website or social media for accurate information. 

Markets

Markets in Tilburg are full of delicious fresh fruit, a wide assortment of nuts, a lovely bouquet of flowers or freshly caught fish and all sorts of cheese. You can also find all kinds of local products like freshly made Stroopwafels! You can visit the markets from Wednesday to Saturday at six different locations in Tilburg.

If you love clothing, fabric and textile, you should pay a visit to the Besterdmarkt, which you can visit every Wednesday. Do you prefer a larger selection of products in the middle of the city center? Then you should visit the Saturday market on Koningsplein.

A tip: take a large shopping bag with you, because many products are sold for great prices!

Five times a year a special market called ‘De Dwalerij’ is organized at ‘Het Dwaalgebied’. This market is exceptionally well suited for foodies and visitors looking for a very special present.
